One man’s trash

Devotional Title: One Man’s Trash

Sometimes I wonder why people hold on to things others would quickly toss away. A friend of mine once saved the cereal box from the first time her son ate solid food. I remember thinking, I would’ve never even considered keeping something like that.

But the truth is—we all value different things. Some people cling to physical mementos, others collect photos, and some hold their memories quietly in the corners of their minds.

Lately, the older I get, the more I crave simplicity. I don’t want clutter—physically or emotionally. It actually unsettles me. My husband, on the other hand, is a collector by nature. He doesn’t always need a reason; he just gathers and holds onto things. We joke that he’s hoarding, but in truth, I believe part of it stems from a mindset rooted in fear—fear of not having enough.

For me, my love of open spaces and clean lines comes from a deep faith that God will always provide. I don’t need to cling to things because I trust in the One who meets every need.

Neither of us is right or wrong. We're just wired differently. And sometimes, it’s hard to understand why someone does what they do—but love always makes room. Love says, I may not get it, but I’ll honor it because I care about you.

As I help my husband find peace in the clutter of his mind and make space for his treasures, he reminds me that some things are worth keeping—like the handwritten notes I gave him when we were dating. They’re not trash. They’re reminders of a beautiful beginning.

We may not be exactly alike, and that’s the beauty of it. We complement one another. In a world full of judgment and division, we need people who draw the good out of us and remind us that we are each fearfully and wonderfully made by the hand of God.

Scripture for Reflection:

  • “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” — Matthew 6:19-20 (NIV)

  • “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

  • “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” — Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Reflection Prompt:
What are you holding onto that may no longer serve you? Are there things you’ve dismissed in others that actually reveal their heart? Ask God to help you see people through His eyes and to release anything you’re clinging to out of fear.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for creating each of us so uniquely. Help me to honor the differences in the people I love—even when I don’t understand them. Teach me to let go of fear, scarcity, and clutter in my heart. Let my trust in You be my anchor. And when I’m tempted to judge, remind me that love always makes room.

Amen
